Picking the best printer for home office is somewhat tricky. While small AIO printers cannot meet your print volume, opting for bulky office printers is a little bit too much. If you are trapped in such a dilemma, Canon offers an alternative by releasing the Canon PIXMA G7020. Specifically designed for home office, this printer promises high productivity and low running cost.
Behind its compact and stylish design, the G7020 boasts a huge ink reservoir that yields more pages for more efficient printing. Thanks to all in one functionality that allows you to handle a lot of works ranging from printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. Coming with an automatic document feeder, this printer lets you print two-sided documents with convenience.
Solid Construction, Compact Design
Design matters. Bringing a new printer means adding a new element to the home office interior. If you care so much about interior design like I do, it is important to choose a printer that matches other elements. Thankfully, the PIXMA G7020 comes with a great design that boosts professional look to the room. The entirely black casing easily blends with your interior so you don’t need to think about redecoration.
The printer is well-constructed with solid plastic, allowing the device to meet your work pace without disturbing rattles. Measuring 9.1 inches high by 15.9 inches wide by 14.5 inches deep and weighing 21.0 pounds, this printer takes a little more space in your office. You might need to clear the desktop or find a separate place for this machine.
This model features a 1.8-inch monochrome display screen that reminds me of my vintage calculator. It also comes with a control panel consisting of numerical buttons and functional buttons that let you configure the operation. Meanwhile, the tilt screen cover lets you see the display from standing or sitting position.
On the top, you can find an automatic document feeder. The presence of this feeder gives a clue that the printer supports automatic duplexing for your efficiency. Moving to the back, there is an extendable input tray that offers higher input capacity. Like other printers with mega reservoirs such as the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-16650, the reservoir of this Canon printer is located on the front to support easier access.
Multipurpose Printer You Can Count On
The PIXMA G7020 is a versatile printer model with multiple functions: printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. Each functionality comes with capable specifications, allowing the device to deliver impressive performance.
Designed as an inkjet printer, this model features Canon FINE inkjet technology with 1792 nozzle configuration for detailed printing. The print resolution supports up to 4800 x 1200 dpi that promotes sharp and crisp black text as well as detailed color images.
Not only can you print documents or graphics, but it also allows you to print photos and illustrations. It supports borderless printing 4 inches by 6 inches for creative projects or your private albums. Additionally, the device lets you print two-sided documents without intervention.
Canon’s G7020 is equipped with a capable copier that handles up to 99 copies. Aside from featuring common functionality of enlargement and reduction, it also comes with a variety of copying features such as borderless copy, auto exposure, manual duplex copy and collation copy. With 2 on 1 and 4 on 1 features, you can combine several documents on one page.
The scanner works as impressively as other functionalities. The flatbed scanner features 1200 x 2400 dpi resolutions for clear documents on screen. Supporting up to 8.5 inches by 11.7 inches, this scanner is great for any business paper. There are some features to enjoy such as multi-page PDF, auto scan mode, scan to PC, wireless scanning, scan to Canon PRINT app, and document removal reminder.
The faxing machine brings a number of features such as caller rejection, dial search, duplex printing, and memory transmission. The transmission speed per black page is 3 seconds with a memory capacity of 50 pages.
Low-Speed Rating Means Slow Output
Canon rates this printer at 13 images per second for mono and 6.8 images per second for color. The speed significantly drops for duplex printing as it prints 2.9 images per minute for mono and 2.8 images per minute for color. Borderless photo sized 4 inches by 6 inches is rated at 45 seconds. The first page out time takes around 18.8 seconds.
From this speed rating, I come to the conclusion that the G7020 has relatively low speed, especially for duplex and color printing. Waiting for the document to come out will be like forever, moreover when you are in a rush.
Double Input Trays, Double Capacity
This model is equipped with double input trays: front cassette and rear tray. The front cassette holds up to 250 sheets of plain paper while the rear tray holds up to 100 sheets of plain paper. That means it has 350-sheets of total capacity. Additionally, it also has a 35-sheet automatic document feeder for 2-sided documents.
The printer supports a variety of paper sizes and types. The supported size ranges from 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches to legal (8.5 inches by 14 inches) as well as the envelope. Meanwhile, the compatible paper includes plain paper, super high gloss, glossy, semi-gloss, and matte paper. You can also load other types of paper such as magnetic photo paper, greeting cards, and removable paper stickers.
Canon PIXMA G7020 Output Quality
Under the big name of Canon, I put a high expectation on this inkjet wireless printer. However, I finally found that my expectation was too high for this model. Overall print result is quite good but I found noticeable lacks came from this machine.
Black text was well-printed without noticeable misshaped characters. The texts were sharp and clear, good enough for office documents. Gradients and graphics were well printed though a bit banding was noticeable. When it comes to color printing, this printer should work harder to compete with color laser printers. The color was less accurate, especially when compared with the original source.
But this machine works a great job for photo printing. Despite its sub-par color accuracy, this printer delivers nice details. It is quite dependable for creative projects or color graphics on your handouts.
Consumables and Print Cost
Canon’s G7020 MegaTank boasts high-capacity ink reservoirs that hold more consumables to yield more pages. It uses Canon GI-20 Black and CMYK to produce optimum print quality. The black consumable produce up to 6,000 prints. Meanwhile, the color consumables deliver up to 7,700 prints per bottle. The excellent cartridge system is the key to lower print cost, not to mention it promises easy access and spill-free replacement.
Compared to other inkjet printers, this model has affordable print costs for mono, color, and photo. According to Canon’s math, it costs around 4 cents per black page and 8 cents per color page. Additionally, it spends around 15 cents for photo printing. Though it’s rather expensive when compared with laser printers, it’s relatively low for inkjets.
Canon PIXMA G7020 Connectivity and Mobile App
The Canon G7020 offers myriad connectivity options to upgrade your printing experience. The standard connectivity includes Ethernet, USB, Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi Direct. The least mentioned enables you to establish a secure connection with your smartphone or tablet. It also supports mobile printing through Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Wireless PictBridge, Canon PRINT app, and Mopria.
This model comes with printing software that includes Canon Easy-PhotoPrint Editor and PosterArtist Lite. The included software lets you edit pictures before printing.
