The OfficeJet Pro 8020 series is a product line released by HP to meet the demand for business-oriented printers for small offices, workgroups, or home offices. There are three main products under this line, but I’m more interested to reveal the HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 than its siblings. This model boasts dozens of features, promising optimized and efficient business printing.
The Pro 8028 all-in-one printer is well built with robust construction and a tight footprint. The product is enhanced with capable specs for each functionality to ensure high-quality output, not only for printing but also copying, scanning, and faxing. Thankfully, it sports an automatic document feeder for easier 2-sided document handling.
Monochromatic Concept Looks Just Fine
Bold yet simple are the best words I could find to describe how the 8028 looks. Not like other HP printers that come with sleek lines, this model looks bold and edgy to accentuate professional nuance. The monochromatic concept is acceptable in most interior styles and it can blend nicely with other room elements.
At 18.11 inches by 20.13 inches by 9.17 inches and weighing 18.04 pounds, the 8028 is compact and lightweight for a moderate business printer. It is constructed with solid plastic material, allowing the machine to meet your fast work pace. While flimsy plastic material often rattles when printing, this robust printer works smoothly on your workstation.
On the exterior, the OfficeJet Pro 8028 is equipped with an ADF that supports automatic duplex scanning and copying. A flatbed scanner and copier are located just below the feeder, allowing you to access these features with ease.
For the control panel, this printer has a 2.65-inch color touch-screen display. The responsive display can be vertically tilted, so you can view the display from most angles. This intuitive control panel lets you set and configure the operation in one touch.
Real AIO Business Oriented Printer
Designed for small businesses and home offices, the multipurpose printer brings capable specs to meet a variety of print volumes and habits. As a result, it works great on all functionalities including printing, copying, scanning, and even faxing.
As with other OfficeJet Pro products, the 8028 is supported by HP Thermal inkjet print technology. Combined with print resolution up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi, this machine promises amazing details and vibrant color. Coming with borderless printing up to 8.5 inches by 11 inches, it can handle marketing materials or creative projects.
Additionally, this product supports automatic duplex printing. That means you can print 2-sided documents without flipping the sheets manually. For the best photo print result, use HP Advanced Photo Paper with 1200 x 1200 dpi input as recommended by the manufacturer.
Aside from printing, this model lets you copy documents with high-quality output at 600 dpi. It offers high copy capacity up to 99 pages at one time, allowing you to work efficiently. Besides reduction and enlargement features, it supports ID card copy, margin shift, resize, copy preview, and duplex copy. Thanks to the automatic feeder so the paper flips automatically.
The scanner uses CIS technology combined with capable resolutions up to 1200 x 1200 dpi. Featuring Optical Character Recognition, Smart Tasks, Scan to Cloud, and many others, it lets you enjoy the upgraded experience with highly legible documents. Not to mention it also supports automatic duplex scanning for efficient work.
If you fax as often as I do, capable specs brought by the 8028 will make you happy. This model allows you to send color documents with a supported resolution up to 300 x 300 dpi. Combined with fax memory up to 100 pages, it offers convenience to handle your messages.
HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 Input Capacity
The business-oriented printer is equipped with an input cassette that holds up to 225 sheets. Just above the cassette, it has a 60-sheet output tray for organized printed documents. This input capacity is sufficient for home offices or small businesses with low print volume. It is also ideal for occasional printing. Besides, the product has an automatic document feeder that holds up to 35 sheets.
The 8028 supports a number of media types and sizes. It can hold a variety of paper types such as plain paper, photo paper, matte paper, and glossy paper. The supported media sizes include index cards (3.5 inches by 5 inches), A4, A5, A6, and envelope.
Amazing Speed and Performance
If you want to find a highlight of this printer, it is surely the print speed. Despite the speed depending on what documents you print, the 8028 is pretty impressive. This model is rated at 29 pages per minute for mono and 25 pages per minute for the color draft in letter size. For ISO printing, the machine produces up to 20 pages per minute for mono and 10 pages per minute for color.
This speed rating is quite excellent for small businesses. Compared to the Canon PIXMA TS8320 consumer-grade photo printer that is rated at 15 pages per minute, the 8028 works amazingly to improve your productivity.
Aside from fast print speed, this product also delivers fast scan and copy speed. It scans up to 8 pages per minute at 200 ppi for mono documents and 3.5 pages per minute for color. Meanwhile, the copier is rated at 29 pages per minute.
HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 Print Result
Supported by HP thermal inkjet technology with a high print resolution, the 8028 promises remarkable print quality. Not only does it produce text with high legibility, but it also prints well-shaped characters without noticeable errors. I found minor banding and streaking on gradients and fills but I thought it was tolerable.
This model also works well for photo printing. It delivers pictures with vibrant and accurate colors, not to mention amazing detail that makes it suitable for marketing purposes. Despite I noticed less defined color for shadowy areas, it did not ruin the whole print quality. Overall, I should say this printer is dependable to produce documents and photos.
Consumables and Running Cost
This all-in-one printer uses four individual print cartridges consisting of Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. It is compatible with HP 910 cartridge that delivers up to 300 pages for black and color cartridges that print up to 315 pages (composite). For cartridge replacement, HP offers HP 910XL that comes with a higher yield up to 825 prints for black and color (composite).
The manufacturer offers instant ink free replacement for 4 months. After four months, you can take advantage of its smart cartridge system. The system monitors your printing habits, allowing the manufacturer to send replacement ink automatically.
Despite the free ink it offers, the OfficeJet Pro 8028 is not a printer with a cheap running cost. It makes you spend around 14.8 cents per mono page and 15 cents per color page. For occasional printing, this cost sounds a little but for hundreds or thousands of pages, it will cost you pretty pennies.
HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 Connectivity Options
The standard interfaces brought to the consumers include USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi Direct. With these connectivity options, the printer can be easily connected to other devices including smartphones and tablets. However, it lacks Bluetooth and external storage for direct printing from SD card. The wireless printer also supports mobile connectivity options including Apple AirPrint and Mopria.
For better printing experience, simply use the HP Smart app that is available on iOS and Android. This app enables you to print PDF files or photos right from your handheld device. Not to mention it lets you manage ink subscription.
Being a modern printer, the 8028 supports voice-activated printing. Thanks to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant that makes it possible to connect the printer with smart home appliances. Now activating your printing machine is getting easier only with your voice.

The support of voice assistants makes this printer look more attractive especially for young users. Thanks to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa that allows you to activate the printer through voice as well as connect the machine with other smart devices at home.
HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 Cons
- High print cost
If you are looking for a printer with a cheap running cost, the 8028 is surely not for you. With 14 cents and 15 cents per page for mono and color, it is going to make your spending sky-rocketing.
- Lack of Bluetooth and external storage
This model comes with standard connectivity, both wired and wireless. However, it lacks Bluetooth and external storage so you cannot enjoy printing directly from the SD card.
Is the HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 a great printer for small businesses? The answer is yes. This model offers plenty of features to promote efficient and fast printing, allowing you to improve work productivity. It also produces excellent output to make sure your business documents are well handled.
